Traveler’s checklist – Travel Tips

Please Note: This TRAVELER’S CHECKLIST is DELIBERATELY EXTENSIVE!

This is a TRAVELER’S LIST of SUGGESTIONS to help guide you in making personal decisions for your Global experience. Some lines on the list below show more than one option to choose from. This list, along with the BACKPACKER’S CHECKLIST should give you enough items to choose from whether you are traveling local or overseas! Items with an (*) are useful products I have used or have been recommended.

Remember, less is more! Here are my ideas….but THINK LIGHT! 


Copy, Print and Save!

Travel Documents

  • Passport
  • Transportation tickets
  • Trip Itinerary/flight confirmation/key phone numbers
  • Credit Cards/cash/travelers checks/checks
  • Entry Visa (and paperwork required)
  • 2 ~ Color Photocopy – first page in Passport and 2nd ID (driver’s license) placed together on the same page
  • 2 ~ Color Photocopy – ‘OPEN IN EMERGENCY’ document packet*
  • 1 ~ Color Copy – Personal Identification Record – PIR*
  • Immunization YELLOW CARD with current inoculations (if overseas)*
  • Personal Medical Card*
  • Local Currency for destination
  • Event reservations
  • Trip cancelation insurance
  • Health Insurance for home and abroad
  • Waterproof document organizer
  • Lodging reservations
  • Frequent Flyer Awards cards
  • Keys
  • A list of your codes (in a criptic you’ll remember) for cell/laptop/debt cards etc.
  • Luggage tags (2 per bag – one inside and one outside)

Departure Gear

  • Musical instrument/protected case – 2 tags (one inside and one outside)
  • Travel luggage or Backpack (airline approved sizes)
  • Daypack or Duffle for carry-on (as shown in photo)
  • Dry bag for wet clothes/stuff sack/laundry bag
  • Travel purse/passport case
  • Money belt/security pouch/neck wallet
  • Guide books and maps, field guide
  • Phrase book
  • Airplane Snacks – especially for those with food allergies
  • Straps to hold your luggage tight and for identification (rainbow in photo)

Electronics

  • Laptop and cables, memory stick
  • International charger plugs, converter
  • Cell phone, cable, charger
  • Currency App/Translator App/WhatsApp
  • Camera/GoPro with video, mini-tripod, battery charger, memory card, camera case, extra battery, film and film shield
  • Waterproof case and wrist strap for waterproof camera
  • Flashlight, night light, head lamp, extra battery
  • CD/DVD/MP3 player with earbuds
  • Travel alarm
  • Travel iron
  • Blow dryer/Electric shaver
  • Binoculars
  • Packable Luggage scale

Personal Items

  • 2-3 Interchangeable color choices for travel clothes (wicking)*
  • Sew a safety cash pocket into your pants
  • Undergarments for various weather and events (wicking)
  • Jacket/vest – insulted for various weather conditions
  • Swim wear/cover ups
  • Rain wear, umbrella
  • Footwear – for city, hiking, beach, snow and showers
  • Shoe insoles – to hide some cash under
  • Socks/nylons/liner socks
  • Gloves/mittens
  • Hat, visor, scarf, bandana
  • Eyeglasses (2 pair), contacts, sunglasses with keeper strap
  • Reading book, journal, drawing book
  • Pen, pencil, color pencils/highlighters, sharpie, mini stapler, tape, sink stopper,  zip tight plastic bags, duct tape
  • Sewing repair kit
  • Small tool kit (multi-tool like a Leatherman, Swiss Army knife)
  • Playing cards/games
  • Laundry detergent
  • Quick-dry microfiber towel/washcloth
  • Sleep sheet

Toiletries

  • Cosmetics/makeup/mirror
  • Hand sanitizer, hand wipes, paper toilet seat covers, tissue for TP
  • Toothbrush/paste/floss/picks/mouthwash
  • Body soap/face scrub
  • Comb/brush
  • Travel bottles for shampoo, skin care creams, soaps
  • Deodorant
  • Sun screen/lip balm
  • Razors/shaving cream
  • Manicure polish/file/clippers
  • Water bottle (with purification filter/tablets)
  • Eye shade and ear plugs

Please consult your local physician or health center to help plan your immunizations and medical needs prior to departure.

Home Checklist

  • Advise banks/credit cards of itinerary and dates
  • Advise family/friend/neighbors of your departure, destinations and itinerary and leave extra key and the ‘OPEN ME IN EMERGENCY’ packet*
  • Arrange for care of lawn and plants (sprinklers timer)
  • Arrange house sitter or pet sitter (reserve a kennel)
  • Advise home alarm company of travel dates
  • Hold mail at Post Office
  • Pre-pay bills
  • Turn off washing machine water valves
  • Turn off cold-water intake valve on water heater and turn temp down
  • Turn down thermostat
  • Stop newspaper
  • Set a plug-in timer for house lights (with intermittent days and times)
  • Empty the contents of your refrigerator
  • Unplug appliances (for possible fire hazards)
  • Hide valuables – safe deposit box, secret safe
  • Re-check locks on doors and windows
